Should Kids Pick One Sport Early? What the Evidence Says About Specializing Young
A review of the evidence found that most elite athletes actually played multiple sports as kids and specialized later, and that intense early single-sport training may raise the risk of overuse injury and burnout.
Many parents feel pressure to have their child commit to one sport early, with year-round training, travel teams, and private coaching, in the hope of a scholarship or elite career. When they reviewed studies of how elite athletes actually developed, a consistent pattern emerged: with a few exceptions in sports where peak performance happens before full maturity, such as rhythmic gymnastics, most top athletes sampled several sports as children and did not specialize seriously until after about age 12. Early diversification did not appear to hold athletes back; in many cases it seemed to be part of the path to the top.
