It is okay to feel relieved. Relief is not the same as not caring. I felt this in my chest. You are not failing. You are surviving something most people never have to.
Community gossip is brutal — how are you coping?
Something I've noticed over the years: the clients most tormented by community talk at the start are often the most settled later, because they built their decisions on facts instead of fear. Let the talkers talk; you focus on the file and the future.
I appreciate you naming this so plainly. In sessions I often suggest deciding in advance on one boring sentence for the curious — something like 'we're doing okay, thanks for asking' — so the vultures get nothing and you spend zero energy improvising.
gossip has a shelf life, i promise. mine felt permanent and now nobody remembers. you'll outlast it.
One thing worth adding on the children, since gossip often reaches them at school: brief, honest, age-appropriate answers from you will beat anything they hear second-hand. Kids handle facts better than mystery.
the whispering at the gurdwara nearly kept me home for months. going anyway, head up, was the best thing i did. their discomfort is not your problem.
Not a legal question really, but I'll say what I tell clients from our community: gossip has no standing anywhere that matters — not in court, not in your file, not in your future. Guard your paperwork and your peace; the rest is weather.
muting was my coping mechanism. whatsapp groups, instagram, certain cousins. not blocked, no drama, just muted. highly recommend.
