How we verify professionals

When you see a Verified badge, it means a real person on our team checked this professional against an official public registry before the listing went live. Here is exactly what that involves.

Lawyers & family-law firms

Every lawyer listing is checked against the Law Society of British Columbia public Lawyer Directory. We confirm:

  • The lawyer is currently a practising member in good standing.
  • Their name and firm match the credentials they submit.
  • They actually practise family / divorce law — not just list it.

We record the Law Society membership number on file. A listing is removed if a member becomes non-practising, suspended, or is disbarred. We are a directory and advertising platform — not a law firm or a referral service, and we never provide legal advice.

Counselors, therapists & psychologists

Counseling designations in BC are held through professional bodies. We verify against the relevant one for each professional:

  • Clinical counselors — BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (RCC) registry.
  • Counselling therapists — Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCC).
  • Psychologists — College of Psychologists of BC.
  • Social workers — BC College of Social Workers.

Where a professional offers a service that isn't governed by a regulatory college, we say so plainly on the listing and show the basis on which they're listed. We never imply a credential a professional doesn't hold.

The review process

  1. Sign up & confirm email. No anonymous professional listings.
  2. Submit credentials. Registry name, membership/registration number, and practice details.
  3. Manual review. A team member checks the registry by hand. Nothing is automated or self-attested.
  4. Go live. Only after review does the listing appear in search, with the Verified badge.
  5. Ongoing. We re-check on renewal and remove listings that lapse, and anyone can report a listing for re-review.

About paid & featured listings

DivorceMaybe is funded by flat monthly listing fees paid by professionals — not by ads, not by selling your data, and never by a cut of a professional's fees or a per-client referral fee. A "Featured" placement is paid advertising and is always labelled as such — but a featured professional is verified to exactly the same standard as a free listing. Paying for visibility never substitutes for verification.

Information on DivorceMaybe is for orientation only and is not legal or medical advice. Always confirm a professional's current standing yourself before engaging. Spotted something wrong? Tell us and we'll review it.
