A free consult is a sales call. It's also genuinely useful if you know what to bring: a 1-page timeline of the marriage, a rough asset list, two specific questions you want answered, and what outcome you're hoping for. Anything to add to the list?

If you're reading this and not sure whether your story belongs — it does. Reply here or start your own thread. We'll be around to keep the space safe.
Adding from the lawyer side — bring two specific questions, and tell us upfront what your budget is. We can almost always find a way to scope around a real budget; we cannot read minds.
I'd add: ask them how they'd handle a specific scenario from your situation. The generic "we fight for you" answers tell you less than the specific ones.
